Synopsis

Scott McPherson's heartbreaking drama follows an estranged family reuniting when Bessie is diagnosed with leukemia. The play explores themes of family obligation, forgiveness, and finding meaning in caregiving relationships, anchored by Bessie's care for her aging father and eccentric Aunt Ruth.

Impressions

Playing 70-year-old Aunt Ruth at my age required mastering physical transformation techniques that would become central to my character acting toolkit. Unlike my typical roles as struggling mothers, Ruth offered the rare opportunity to portray a character whose primary arc wasn't about emotional breakdown—someone else gets to cry this time! Ruth's three collapsed vertebrae demanded specific physicality research and consistent execution. I developed techniques for showing chronic pain without overplaying, creating a believable older body while maintaining Ruth's essential spark and humor. Working with makeup and costume, plus developing Ruth's particular way of moving and holding herself, taught me comprehensive age transformation. These skills would later enhance my portrayals of other characters dealing with physical limitations or aging. The workshop taught me that character often begins with the body, not the mind, and that external transformation can unlock internal discoveries. The biggest challenge was maintaining Ruth's physical limitations throughout the entire performance while staying present in scene work. I learned to make physical choices that supported rather than overshadowed the emotional content. Working with Melissa Livingston helped me understand how physical choices serve the larger story. Ruth's physical struggles mirror the family's emotional ones, and her resilience despite disability reflects the play's themes about finding strength through connection.
