Impressions
Playing Mrs. Medlock at 413 Repertory Theater marked a significant step in my professional theater career, moving from university productions to fully professional work. Mrs. Medlock, the stern but ultimately caring housekeeper, required balancing her rigid exterior with the genuine concern she feels for the children in her care. The role demanded both dramatic weight and vocal strength for the musical numbers, allowing me to showcase skills developed through years of voice training. Working with 413 Repertory's professional standards taught me about the increased pace and precision required in professional theater—longer rehearsal days, faster memorization expectations, and maintaining consistency across extended runs. Mrs. Medlock's Yorkshire accent provided the perfect opportunity to use my dialect training in a professional setting, creating authentic character voice that served the story's English setting. The character's arc from strict authority figure to someone who learns to show compassion mirrors the garden's transformation from neglected space to blooming sanctuary. This production reinforced my love for maternal characters who must balance strength with nurturing, and working at this professional level confirmed my readiness for more challenging theater opportunities.
