Erin Floyd-Smith as Choir in Godspell — Patio Playhouse, 2010

Synopsis

Stephen Schwartz's beloved musical based on the Gospel of Matthew, featuring a company of performers who tell the parables and stories of Jesus through song, dance, and theatrical storytelling. The musical combines contemporary musical styles with timeless spiritual themes.

Impressions

Being part of the choir in Godspell at Patio Playhouse was my second time with this beautiful musical, allowing me to deepen my appreciation for Stephen Schwartz's sophisticated composition and the show's spiritual themes. Unlike my previous Godspell experience where the choir was separated behind a fence, this production hopefully allowed for more integration with the main action and direct audience connection. Working in the ensemble taught me about the collective energy required for successful musical theater and how individual voices contribute to the larger spiritual and emotional impact. Godspell's music demands both technical vocal skill and genuine emotional connection to the material, as the spiritual content requires authenticity rather than mere performance. The community theater setting at Patio Playhouse provided experience working with diverse cast members of varying skill levels, teaching me about professional collaboration and support in non-academic environments. This production enhanced my musical theater abilities and reinforced my appreciation for shows that combine entertainment with deeper meaning. The experience also contributed to my San Diego theater network and demonstrated my willingness to return to roles that offer continued learning opportunities.
